Bath Cake Boutique

Here's where I ramble about Bath Cake Boutique. The products, the formulas, or whatever. Also probably a smattering about my sons, husband, and life in general.

Not my favorite...

I've been using my own homemade scouring powder for a couple weeks now. This is not my most favorite product. It is quite heavy on the scouring, and since it contains no soap, I end up washing my sink twice ... once with the scouring powder and then I take a small squirt of my liquid soap (I've switched all liquid soap in my home to organic liquid castile soap). It takes longer, the result is about the same as when I was using comet with bleach. I'm unsure if not using chemicals is an environmental plus when you use twice as much water to do the same job. Still pondering that one. It is very cheap, though and easy to make. I keep it in a 1 qt. mason jar under my sink with one of those new plastic tops they have for them so its all one piece. Oh, I've used this in the toilets as well. It does a really terrific job at cleaning. But I miss the smell of bleach in the bowl afterward. I've been working on a toilet cleaner. Its coming along but is a slow process. Not in love with any of the tries yet.

Scouring powder:

equal parts (I started with 1/3 c of each, but you can make any quantity, just keep tightly covered):

borax
baking soda
salt (table salt, nothing fancy)

Going to try to post more

I was just posting on my personal journal at live journal when I realized I'm posting about soaping/cleaning stuff ... and I should be doing that here! So... here we go, I will try to start remembering to post more.

I have been in the process of changing over all my cleaning products to something I can make and something that doesn't beat up the environment. Oh, and bonus points (to myself! lol) if its also inexpensive.

Something I tried out the other night and worked WONDERFULLY is a homemade soft scrub. It SHINES everything I used it on! I was hesitant as this is single use, you can't mix it up in a great big tub & use it over time, you have to make it and then use it up. I had enough to do my stove top (which is now glistening like never before!) and my tub with surround with a single recipe:

1/4 c borax
1/2 t liquid soap
1/2 t lemon juice

If you ask me the recipe is a bit messed up, as it says to mix the borax with the soap into a paste and then add lemon juice. Well, 1/2 t isn't enough to make a paste. So I used a bit more and a bit more lemon juice too. To make an actual paste. I used an organic liquid soap.
