Bath Cake Boutique has just undergone a make over of its own! Check out www.bathcake.com to see the exciting new look for Bath Cake. The products are the same great products. Even the bakery boxes everyone has known and loves have stayed the same. But the look and feel is a bit made-up! Have fun, look around and if you have any comments or suggestions, pass them along!

Not all of the lovely limited edition soaps get pictured on the web site. Many of them go too fast just by word of mouth. So ~ to celebrate the lvoely new make over from now through the end of August with every order you will receive a lovely limited edition soap surprise! If you have a preference to color scheme or scent, include it in the notes of your order and I try to accomodate!

As always, if you would rather not receive these periodic updates simply let me know and you will be removed from the list immediately.

So what's in the works? Glad you asked! Coming soon is an all new hair care line.... and soon after that ~ by request ~ mineral make-up!

Signs of Spring

Spring has been in the air the last couple of days here in CT. Today all the windows were thrown open in the first great "air out" of the winter air stuck in the house. What a glorious luxury.

Another sign of spring are all the new ideas I have for fun new products. I have a list taped to my work area just to keep them all straight! :) Hopefully there will be sneak peeks available soon.

Bath Cake Boutique will be making its 2009 season debut at the Lower Litchfield Flea Market in Bethlehem on April 25th. Hope that day isn't full of spring showers!! :)

Hudson miracle

It really can't go without comment. The US Air flight that came down yesterday into the Hudson river was truly a miracle. The pilot and crew were amazing and getting 150 or so people safely off a downed aircraft in icy water - well, wow, just wow. That it was so close to us physically I guess makes it all the more heart wrenching.

Working on some great new things to be added to the web site. First and foremost will be some Valentine's Day goodies of course! Look for soaps and dressed up bath cakes.

Also ... I've had an idea for a while and now a customer request or two, so ... very soon I will be releasing a "box of the month" club. Where you can buy special gift boxes to savor or to give each month. Yay!

Another new addition coming soon will be the "big basket" this I designed for a very special customer over Christmas. She gave them to everyone she knows, I think! Well, today someone else asked for something similar so I will be looking to add it as a regular ongoing product, as well.

Connecticut Women's Forum

I went to the Central Connecticut Women's Forum, North Chapter January meeting last night as a guest. It was really great! I met so many fantastic women doing a great number of exciting things. It was a wonderful way to connect outside of my own little community. I will be joining as they are running a membership special this month, anyway!

WINSTED — Erin Fallon-Sullivan is the owner of a home business, the mother of three and a cancer survivor. Despite all the obstacles she’s had to overcome, she always has a smile on her face.

Fallon-Sullivan was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2006 at the age of 36. At the time, she was a single mother working accounting jobs and home schooling her three boys, Andrew, 9, William, 8, and Patrick, 7.

"I was told by doctors that I was going to leave three little boys behind," said Fallon-Sullivan. "They were wrong."

Shortly before her diagnosis, Fallon-Sullivan reunited with an old friend, Thomas Sullivan.

"I knew Thomas for about 10 years prior. He had worked at a company that I worked at. He left the company and the company folded and he moved to Missouri," said Fallon-Sullivan. "He sent me a random e-mail 10 years later and moved home from Missouri a few months later."

Fallon-Sullivan decided to move forward with plans to wed and become a family, despite an unfavorable prognosis.

"We were planning on marrying in November, but moved it up to May (2007)," said Fallon-Sullivan. "We married on Memorial Day. I got married bald. It was very, very last minute. We got married with only six days of planning."

But in the end, she said the day was perfect. Both she and Thomas volunteer for the Winsted Fire Department and many of their guests were members of the department. Between the Memorial Day parade and a fire call earlier in the day, guests attended in attire ranging from turn-out gear to parade uniforms.

"It was really the most perfect day," said Fallon-Sullivan.

After the wedding, Fallon-Sullivan’s health improved and she began to think about going back to a passion: baking.

"After chemo and surgery and I got better again, what I really wanted to do was bake," she said.

However, Connecticut does not allow home-baking operations, so Fallon-Sullivan had to find another way to put her talents to use. Bath Cake Boutique was born.

Fallon-Sullivan makes bath products that look like baked goods. She sells all-natural soaps, body butter and "bath cakes" (also known as bath bombs) over her Web site, bathcake.com. She has recently started producing laundry detergents, as well as a variety of other creative products.

"I just started working with
water-soluble paper to put into soap to embed photos and logos," said Fallon-Sullivan.

Bath Cake Boutique has been in business for a year and has seen a steady increase in sales.

Pancakes!

We are on vacation this week. In New Hampshire. This morning we followed the recommendation of the activities director at the resort we stay at annually ... she recommended Heritage Farm Pancake House. This was the best breakfast EVER!!! Ever. Ever. Ever!! I can hardly begin to describe the quality of the food. But not only that we got ... pumpkin, egg nog, cranberry orange, blueberry, plain, chocolate chip, and double chocolate chip pancakes! Along with a platter of eggs, bacon & homefries ... all served family style. And to top it all off, while the food was being made we were encouraged to go play with toys, play in the playground or go out back and visit the animals. This was a dining room in a fully working farm and sugarhouse. We fed the pig, cow, goats, ducks, geese, chickens, donkey, and dog pancakes. :) They loved them too. Then we ate this amazing food and sampled different syrups. We left with a syrup and ... (you knew this had to be related to soap somehow) a goat soap made at another local farm. I saw it in a couple different places ... and decided to give one a try. For some reason I started telling the woman who took care of us that I make soap ... she handed me some money and placed an order right there and then. I so can't wait to get her order out to her, she took such great care of us and gave us such an exception experience ... I hope to do the same for her!!

Not soap but soup!

I was just whipping this wonderful fall soup & thought I'd share... I'm posting the original recipe ... read to the end though, there's a lot you can do with this recipe.

1/2 pound butternut squash
1/2 c chopped onion
2 T butter
2 c vegetable broth
1/2 c heavy cream
1/2 t fresh ground pepper

Peel & cut squash into cubes. Bake at 400 until soft, about an hour.

In large pot, saute onion in butter until soft. Add squash & broth, cook over low heat 30 min.

Remove from heat & blend until smooth.

Add cream to hot soup & serve.

I've made it that way a million times and its great. It is just as great using leftover mashed squash from a meal. Its good without the cream or using half & half instead. I have substituted apple cider for the veggie broth and yum! It "reheats" great, too. What I generally do is use leftover squash, broth or cider, cook then when it comes to the put it through the blender part, I do that and pour it into containers for the freezer. When I take it out sometimes I add a little milk or cream when I'm heating it up, but most often I don't. Honestly, I almost never measure anything in this recipe.

It is really healthy & filling and is just amazing this time of year. I would have tried sprinkling nutmeg in there too, but its not Thomas' favorite spice so I haven't. :)

So I'm wondering ... would people like to buy "seconds"? Basically product that works properly but isn't pretty for one reason or another? Hmm. Any opinions would be great!
